About Sunoco

Sunoco Lubricants are now available through Tribospec.

Welcome to Sunoco Lubricants
Sunoco was founded on March 27, 1886, when Joseph Newton Pew and Edward O. Emerson, partners in The Peoples Natural Gas Company in Pittsburgh, Pa., made a bold move to diversify their business.

In May 1901, the company, headed by Mr. Pew was incorporated in New Jersey as Sun Company and began securing leases and crude oil in the new Spindletop field in Texas. That same year, with business growing, Mr. Pew purchased 82 acres of land in Marcus Hook, Pa., as the site for a second refinery to process crude oil shipped by tanker from Spindletop. Marcus Hook went on stream on March 20th.

The next 100 years brought about major growth and many changes.

The critical steps taken by Sun in recent years have prepared the company to succeed in a new environment for the petroleum industry. On November 6, 1998, the company's name was again changed to more clearly reflect its principal business. Having become one of the largest independent U.S. refiner-marketers, Sun Company Inc. became Sunoco Inc. - a company with a history that spans half of the American experience, but one fully prepared for the 21st Century.

In 2004, Sunoco Inc. concluded a license agreement with Tribospec Corp. (Tribospec Inc.) for lubricants in Canada.

Tribospec Corporation was founded in 1990 from the initiative of Julian E. Cininni and six ex-Sunoco Canada (Suncor) employees.  This new company would continue to represent and manufacture Sunoco-brand products under license in Eastern Canada, while maintaining operations of the old blending and packaging plant.

Tribospec sells products throughout Eastern Canada while exporting 8% elsewhere on the international markets.  To better meet future customer needs and changing technical requirements, more than $6 million was invested in a state-of-the-art plant, including offices, warehouse, and blending and packaging units.

The addition of the Sunoco brand will provide added value to our customers and expand our reach to all of Canada. It is our priority to supply our customers with top quality products and we now have a greater variety of products to offer.  Tribospec has created a niche for itself in the market by providing specialty products that major companies often do not have available.  Our customer-oriented policy is geared towards providing service that is unattainable by larger oil companies.

Tribospec is a reliable source of supply for our customers.  Integration of the supply chain across all functions and assets has improved our operational excellence while increasing revenues and profitability.

Our continued success will rest on these pillars:

  • Improving our knowledge base
  • Providing value-added solutions to customers
  • Achieving financial strength to re-invest in the business
  • Developing and maintaining capable management to lead us into the future
